A Message from the Principal
Dear Parkway Families,
This is that wonderful time of year when the weather starts to turn, the days get longer, and it is the perfect moment to encourage our children to head outside. If I could give one simple piece of advice for this time of year, it would be this: a little more outdoor time and a little less screen time can make a big difference for children. Research shows that outdoor play improves focus, mood, sleep, and even school performance. As both a principal and a parent, I can tell you that some of the best conversations you will ever have with your children happen outside; walking, playing catch, riding bikes, or just sitting together in the fresh air.
You may have heard your children talking about something new at recess. Our fourth-grade Think Tank students have started recess clubs for our younger students. They are teaching basketball, soccer, four-square, and running games. What makes this so special is that the learning is coming from other students. Our fourth graders are learning leadership, organization, and patience, while our younger students are learning new games and building confidence. It has been wonderful to watch students encouraging each other, solving problems, and, most importantly, having fun together.
We are also excited to begin a tutoring partnership with Brightview Senior Living. This intergenerational partnership will give our students the opportunity to read and work with senior citizens in our community. These programs are incredibly meaningful for both students and seniors. Students build confidence and communication skills, and seniors benefit from the joy and energy that children bring. It is a wonderful example of how learning can bring generations together.
Several of our fourth-grade Think Tank students presented the idea for this collaboration at the March 23 Board of Education meeting. They did an outstanding job representing our school, and we were incredibly proud of the way they spoke about their ideas and experiences. When students are given real leadership opportunities, they often exceed even our highest expectations.
As we move into this spring season, we encourage you to take advantage of the extra daylight and warmer weather. Go for a walk after dinner, play outside, visit a park, or simply spend some time outdoors together. These small moments of family time are the ones children remember.
Take care,
Suzanne Barbi
